ECR Leaders Forum 2026

The ECR Ireland Leaders Forum 2026 welcomed senior leaders from across retail, FMCG and technology to discuss the forces influencing the industry, from changing consumer expectations and digital transformation to the future of health, food and shopper behaviour

Hazel Ahern-Flynn from IBEC outlined the economic backdrop facing Ireland, highlighting inflation pressures, energy market volatility and the impact on consumer confidence and spending patterns. Hazel also explored a range of economic scenarios facing Ireland, examining how continued uncertainty around energy costs and geopolitical developments could affect inflation, domestic demand and business performance over the coming year.

The Future Consumer session, introduced by Keith Farrell, Dr. Oetker, explored how shoppers are redefining value, trust and convenience. Lucy Cunningham, dunnhumby, shared insights into how consumers increasingly expect retailers to deliver relevant, personalised and seamless experiences while remaining transparent in how data and AI are used. The presentation examined how younger, digitally connected consumers are influencing expectations around personalisation, data sharing and product discovery, while highlighting the growing importance of trust, relevance and clear consumer benefits.

One of the most thought provoking sessions focused on the rise of GLP-1 medications and their potential to influence consumer behaviour. Scott Ellis and Chris Upton of Gate One highlighted how these treatments are already influencing grocery spend, lifestyle choices, health priorities and emotional wellbeing, with implications far beyond healthcare into retail, travel, fitness, beauty and FMCG. The session also examined how GLP-1 users are adopting more conscious purchasing habits, changing consumption occasions and placing greater emphasis on long term wellbeing, confidence and personal health outcomes.

Digital transformation was another major focus, with Richard Jones, Amazon Web Services (AWS), demonstrating how AI, cloud technology and advanced data capabilities are changing the operating model of retailers and FMCG businesses. Richie explored the emergence of the “agentic consumer”, where AI assistants increasingly influence search, comparison and purchasing decisions. He also discussed the first 15 months of Amazon.ie and the new fully automated Amazon DC in Darlington, UK, providing examples of how technology is changing both customer experiences and operational efficiency.

The conversation around “Food Fit for the Future”, moderated by Chris Knowles, Birds Eye UK & IE, examined the growing complexity of the health landscape. Lauren Woodley, Nomad Foods, explored the increasing pressure on the food industry from regulation, nutrition transparency, health scanning apps, GLP-1 adoption and conscious consumption. Lauren highlighted how obesity, nutrition and public health concerns are driving greater scrutiny of food systems and accelerating change across the sector.

Kevin Friel, STRONG ROOTS, examined the future of food through the lens of changing consumer priorities, highlighting growing interest in protein, fibre, transparency, simpler ingredients and healthier eating habits. He also explored how technology, personalised shopping, connected kitchens and environmental considerations are influencing future food choices and product development.

A highlight of the day was a leadership conversation led by Declan Carolan with Noel Keeley, CEO of Musgrave and Gráinne Galvin, Country Manager of General Mills Ireland, discussing leadership, culture and decision making in an environment defined by continuous change, increasing complexity and evolving consumer expectations.

The ECR Ireland Co Chairs, Micheal Donohoe, Tesco Ireland and Paul Kelly, Unilever Ireland, closed the Forum by reinforcing one clear message: retail and FMCG are entering a period where consumer expectations, health trends, technology and economic uncertainty are all converging, creating both significant challenges and new opportunities for those willing to adapt.

Thank you to all speakers, sponsors, Irish Distillers, Vista Foods, dunnhumby, Tesco Ireland and Unilever and attendees who contributed to such an insightful event.
