ECR Ireland Shrinkage Learning Programme

Shrinkage ...

... refers to all intended sales income that does not or cannot be realized.

... can be malicious or non-malicious and in-store or process related.

... management techniques are available from ECR.

Our Vision

To be the #1 “think tank” delivering thought leadership for shrinkage management of consumer products in Ireland.

Our Goal – Lose Less Sell More

• To provide a platform which facilitates and supports the Irish Retailer and Manufacturer community to collaborate in creating, exploring and learning effective shrinkage control strategies and practices.
• To reduce shrinkage in Supply Chain end-to-end, increase margins and enable growth.
• Introduce the ECR Loss Prevention Scorecard as a means to encouraging widespread adoption of the Loss Prevention Pyramid into Irish retail operations.
• To keep up-to-date with all ECR Europe Shrinkage Workgroup Activities.
Operationalizing the Loss Prevention Pyramid
• Operationalize the pyramid through concrete examples of how each of the 11 elements work in practice based upon the experiences of high performing retailers.
• Develop an on-line tool that will enable retailers to ‘measure’ their current performance against these areas and create a ‘Pyramid Compliance Score’.

ECR Europe Projects 2012

1. Understanding Shrinkage in 21st Century Retailing
• Retailing and loss prevention is becoming more and more complex as the range of modes of operation increase.
• variety of online options including direct web selling and home delivery;
• multiple store formats ranging in location, size, product range and operating times;
• and in-store operations such as the degree of use and type of self-scanning technologies (partial and total store coverage, checkout and handheld).
• Understanding what these changes mean for loss prevention is the purpose of this study. It will aim to understand how the risk of shrinkage varies between different types of retail format and what the implications are for managing shrinkage, the use of product protection technologies and the types of products merchandised.

2. New Technologies: Benefits, Consequences and Risks
• Identify new technologies on the near horizon
• Those designed to respond to shrinkage
• Those designed to impact upon retailing (consumer experience)
• Consider the implications of these developments on shrinkage management – how might they reduce shrinkage or create new risks?
• Consider ways in which potential new risks might be dealt with

3. Getting to Grips With Hot Stores
• Previous studies have tried to understand the role store management play in militating against certain stores suffering higher rates of loss than others,
• This study proposes to look at as wide a wide range of variables as possible that may help to explain why particular stores are more likely to suffer higher rates of loss
• Through an in-depth data collection and analysis process, the study will endeavour to identify the key variables that explain why some stores are hotter than others.

Shrinkage: who really pays?

Traditionally shrinkage has been seen as a retailer problem, but growing awareness of its impact on the shopper now means manufacturers must also think critically about it. • Recognise the value of retailers and manufacturers working together to produce sustainable and longer lasting solutions to shrinkage.
• Learn how packaging and its design can influence shrinkage.

Who should attend?

Participation is for the following members of ECR Ireland

Retailers
• Store Owners / Managers
• Operations Managers
• Cost Controllers
• Grocery, Pharmacuetical, Off-Licence, DIY, Electrical
Suppliers / Manufacturers
• Suppliers of high value product (e.g. Beers, wine, spirits, pharmacy, cosmetics, batteries)
• Suppliers of highly pilferable product
• Suppliers of perishable or easily damaged product

Every type of retail business no matter what size or category of product sales on offer, is open to the threat of “lost profit opportunities” as a result of shrink. Traditionally and in the main this has been perceived as external theft of goods by customers, suppliers  or staff but it is much more than this. Shrink can also be caused by poor stock control on fresh produce, damage to goods once received and inaccurate pricing, IT or data errors. With the opportunity for sales reducing as consumer spending declines, NOW is the time to address the challenges of best practice on Shrink within your business. ECR Ireland have taken the lead in this specialist area and invite you to attend the first Shrink Share Shop in Ireland.

Irish Shrink Management Opportunity

ECR Ireland fielded the 1st online Irish Shrink survey in 2008 to better understand industry Shrink awareness and to identify how retailers & suppliers addressed Shrink issues. The survey was repeated in January 2010.

2008 Key insights:
68% of respondents had never received Shrink training
63% of respondents don’t have access to robust Shrink data
78% of respondents didn’t have a stated Shrink policy

Primary Shrink focus was on preventing shoplifting:
- defensive merchandising / delisted products
- inconvenienced shoppers / sales decline
2010 Key Insights:
87% agreed that Shrink is more important now
54% agreed it is an issue in more categories
Only 32% had received comprehensive Shrink training
just 19% agreed that they regularly engaged with their retailer / supplier partner to work on Shrink
When asked “How can your business improve its Shrink performance in 2010?”
#1 response (57%) was “Improve staff Shrink awareness & training”

Conclusions:
(1) Reducing Shrink is even more important for 2010
(2) There is a need for more Shrink training and collaboration
