ECR Ireland 2008 Conference Presentations
The theme for the Annual ECR Ireland Conference 2008 was "Working together - Sharing Best Practice". There were five presentations from ECR Ireland Workgroups which showcased examples of collaborative projects between Irish retailers & suppliers with an objective of "working together & sharing best practice".
The sub-themes of Sustainability & the Irish Consumer were dealt with in two presentations each with particular acclaim for Jon Wright's (co-founder, Innocent Drinks) address, "A few steps towards sustainable smoothies" and the results of ECR Ireland's "Holistic Shopper Research" delivered by Ian McShane (MD, Behaviours & Attitudes)
Trevor Sargent T.D. Minister of State for Food & Horticulture
The Minister opened the conference by alluding to the importance of sustainability within the Irish Grocery Industry and challenged delegates to "lead the way" by making their businesses more sustainable and by keeping ahead of legislation.
"What Next? The changing Consumer Landscape in Ireland"
Michael set the scene for the conference by outlining the state of the Irish economy and declaring that the fundamentals of the economy are strong and in place and that businesses should be positive and upbeat when assessing future consumer spending.

"Sell more, waste less - by learning together"
James Tupper, IGD, delivered the outcome of the General Learning Programme 2007 and outlined the programme for 2008. The results of the collaborative workstreams between Tesco Ireland, Glanbia Consumer Foods and Nestle Ireland were delivered by Mick Farrell (Tesco Ireland), Brian Daly (Nestle Ireland), Chris Devaney (Glanbia Consumer Foods) & Martin Kavanagh (Tesco Ireland). "Undressing the Irish shopper - consumer behaviour revealed"
Susan Moore D'Arcy introduced the session by outlining the work of the ECR Ireland Cat Man Workgroup. This was followed by a presentation from Ian McShane, MD, Behaviors & Attitudes, where the results of the first ECR Ireland Holistic Shopper Research were released. "Ready for the supply chain of the future? Ready to work together?"
John McGinley (SHS Sales & Marketing) & Jim Bracken (GS1 Ireland) release the results of their respective Scorecards and compare the Irish results with those of Europe. The results clearly show that Ireland is lagging behind with regard to supply chain management techniques and GS1 standards & adoption. Improvement in suggested areas will increase product availability and reduce out-of-stocks.
